Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)
Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR): Time to restore service after a failure.
Also known as: MTTR
Formula
MTTR = Average of (Recovery time - Failure time) Computable definition
The canonical formula in the GASP formula grammar. The MCP server compiles it to SQL over the datasets listed below.
avg(field.recovery_time) Unit: minutes
Notes: recovery_time is minutes from failure to service restored per incident (ontology field), so the formula averages it directly. Mean Time to Resolve (mttr) is a separate metric that reads started_at and resolved_at.
Data requirements
Grain: Per event · Frequency: Per deploy · Aggregation: event · Staged: no · Main source: Incident Management.
| Field | Dataset | Type |
|---|---|---|
recovery_time | incident | integer |
started_at | incident | timestamp |
Example SQL (Postgres)
SELECT (SELECT AVG(recovery_time) FROM incident WHERE started_at >= :period_start AND started_at < (:period_end + INTERVAL '1 day')) AS mean_time_to_recovery_mttr From an agent: with the GASP MCP server, call
lookup_metric({ "name": "Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)" }) or generate_query({ "metric": "Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)", "adapter": "<your adapter JSON>" }).
Benchmarks
