Core Revenue Metrics Outcome

MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue)

MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue): The total predictable revenue from active subscriptions, normalized to a monthly value.

Also known as: MRR

Formula

MRR = Sum of (Monthly subscription value for all active customers)
MRR contribution = Annual Contract Value / 12

Computable definition

The canonical formula in the GASP formula grammar. The MCP server compiles it to SQL over the datasets listed below.

sum(field.mrr where field.subscription_status = 'active') at period_end

Unit: currency

Breakdowns

  • by_plan: one row per plan_name value
  • by_segment: one row per segment value

Notes: Annual contracts contribute annual value / 12. Excludes one-time fees, trials and non-guaranteed usage. by_plan returns one row per plan the subscriptions are priced by, with the plan id and plan name: the name lives on the plan dataset and subscriptions reach it through plan_id. by_segment returns one row per customer segment, read from the subscription snapshot at period end.

Data requirements

Grain: End-of-month snapshot · Frequency: Daily sync · Aggregation: snapshot (month) · Staged: no · Main source: Billing.

Field Dataset Type
mrr subscription decimal
snapshot_date subscription date
subscription_status subscription string
Example SQL (Postgres)
SELECT (SELECT COALESCE(SUM(mrr), 0) FROM subscription WHERE snapshot_date = :period_end AND subscription_status = 'active') AS mrr

What It Tells You

The current run rate of your recurring revenue engine.

Common Mistakes

  • Including one-time fees (setup, professional services)
  • Including usage/consumption revenue that isn't guaranteed
  • Double-counting customers during plan changes
  • Not normalizing annual contracts to monthly
  • Treating MRR as an accounting figure
